An Experimental Study on Renal Artery Embolization with the Mixture of Ethanol and Iodized Oil(Lipiodol)

Abstract
As an embolic material, ethanol is relatively well used clinically in the past several year.
For the purpose of making ethanol radio-opaque as well as effective in embolization, various mixture of Lipiodol and ethanol was infused into renal arteries of 35 rabbits. Sequential renal arteriographies and simple abdomen radiographies were taken before and after infusion.
After 2 weeks follow up, pathologic examination was carried out. The results were as follows ;
1. There was no embolization effect with infusion of 100% Lipiodol and with infusion of 50% Ethanol solution.
2. Fifty percent Ethanol-Lipiodol solution had the renal embolization effect equal to that of absolute ethanol, while sufficiently radio-opaque that, enable to be observed under fluoroscopy.
3. Seventy five percent Ethanol-Lipiodol solution also had the renal embolization effect equal to that of absolute ethanol but the radio-opacity was not sufficient.
Therefore 50% Ethanol-Lipiodol solution can be used clinically in renal embolization with its effective embolization results and sufficient radio-opacity.
